Why Flipside
Our culture and media bombard students with messages about sex that are not only untrue but also dangerous to their development. Cultural messages of sexual activity as a recreational and expected part of the dating process, and freely provided protection for "safe sex" are overwhelming students today. In addition, the message that cohabitation is healthy and marriage is unnecessary is damaging to the development of students' human sexuality and their understanding of healthy familiy formation. As an educational extension of Segue meeting the state required abstinence based sex-education in Georgia public schools, Flipside seeks to give students the opportunity to hear the truth about sex. In an educational and non-threatening way, we present the "flipside" of the cultural message about teen sexuality and sexual activity.
What is Flipside's Student Program?
The abstinence program used for Flipside is a 2 to 3 day curriculum that has been adapted from Heritage Community Services' standard ten day curriculum. Though designed to be presented in a classroom setting, it can easily and readily be expanded in situations where more time and interaction are available. This interactive curriculum teaches students the risks of sexual activity outside of marriage and helps them understand human sexuality, relationships, the risks of cohabitation, and the advantages of marriage. It also helps them develop skills for practicing abstinence. Problem solving activities, role playing, and periods of discussion and debate allow students to see the advantages of abstinence and make personal decisions about the subject in an informed and independent manner.
What is Flipside's Goal?
The specific goal of the program is to increase the number of students abstaining from sexual activity outside of marriage. The measurable goals are reduction in adolescent births and abortions, reduction in adolescent pregnancies, and reduction in adolescent STD infection. The short term measurable classroom goals and objectives include; having students able to define what abstinence is and is not, what sexual activity is and is not, what human sexuality is, and what the long term effects of sexually transmitted diseases are. Clubs, classes, and accountability groups will be made available to students who desire to practice abstinence and connect with other students who share their goal.
What about Parents?
Flipside offers a two hour training workshop for parents . It is designed to teach parents how to help their children stay safe and healthy in today’s sexualized culture. The training provides information that parents can take and share with their child, and includes a time for parents to ask questions and voice concerns. It utilizes an interactive presentation which covers the following topics:
Culture
Human Sexuality
STDs
Adolescent Brain Research
Distinguishing Between Love, Lust, or Infatuation
The Advantages of Marriage
